May in Cambodia happens to be the time when flame trees blossom. There is a book about Angkor entitled Blossoming in May, which referred to the flame trees blossoming in May. The flame tree is the national flower of Cambodia. Outside Angkor, there are various colorful flowers, trees and buildings. However, once entering the Angkor Wat, which has been in existence for more than 1,000 years, one will feel instantly attracted by its magic force. What you can you see is only endless indigo. It seems that the sunlight is reluctant to come here.
In the afternoon, entering the Bayon Temple, one can see 54 stone pagodas, high or low. On the four sides of the top of each pagoda are carved different human expressions. They look solemn and peaceful and seem to be smiling. Their drooping eye-lids seem to glare at the characters of the Cambodian Dynasty. The splendors of Cambodia have gone far away. So too are these pagodas.
Passing the lofty board warning of land mines, one can get to the giant temple complex that has collapsed. Maybe these are the most luxurious and most expensive ruins in the world. Every piece of stone here is a national treasure with more than 1,000 years of history. So instantly one perhaps would feel as if returning to ancient times, since the collapsed temples still display their former splendors. Through the elegantly carved building ruins, one can imagine the splendid civilization and richness of the ancient Cambodian nation.
The warm evening is the best time at the Angkor Wat, since the setting sunshine is just like Angkor Wat itself. Nevertheless, it still is Cambodia"s soul. Its collapse does not prevent us from touching its wounded body with awe. Despite vicissitudes, at any time, it can enable people to feel the grand splendors of the ancient Cambodian empire.
