Taiwan is not the beauty who makes you shocked at the first time. Only when walking slowly in each street, enjoying the mild sea wind filling with your heart gradually and intoxicated in the tea scented flavor spreading in the beautiful landscape, can you feel her suave temperament and unique charm from these minor details.
Taiwan is comely in her appearance. The water in Sun Moon Lake reflects the elegance and dim mist of the landscape; the forest in Ali Mountain records the gift endowed by nature for thousand of years; the immense Pacific Ocean takes on a picturesque blue; the mark tower of the north tropic line loftily looks at the sea. The landscapes along both banks set off the unsophisticated and wonderful local customs of Taiwan minorities. Taipei 101, the world’s highest modern building is towering into the sky. The Taipei Palace has collected a large number of priceless treasures representing the culture of ancient China. If the Forbidden City in Beijing ranks first in its buildings all over the world, the Taipei Palace must rank first in its collections.
In terms of city construction, Taiwan is a place which interweaves history with modernity and blends tradition and reality. Various traditional buildings often loom up the high modern buildings. All kinds of temples, ancestral temples can be found all over the island. Buildings and roads which are filled with Chinese cultural style such as the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Zhongshan Road, Nanjing Road, etc are everywhere, making people genuinely feel the uninterrupted kinship affection between Taiwan and the mainland. Interestingly, several main streets are all named after “Ren’ai” (kindheartedness), “Zhongxiao” (loyalty and piety), “Renyi” (kindheartedness and justice), and the characters “Ren” (humane), “Yi” (justice), “Li” (rite), “Zhi” (wisdom), “Xin” (integrity) are often common in Taiwanese names, which are advocated by Confucius. As a result, a conclusion can be drawn that they have worship towards Confucius Culture.
Night markets, closely linked with Taiwanese life, are of the most “Taiwan Style” places. The whole night is brightened by lights and crowded with unceasing stream of people. Everything is available here, and very inexpensive: groceries, entertainment, clothes and accessories, and daily necessities. Shopping in the night markets has become a life style of Taiwanese.
“Areca-nut bears on areca tree, one can first taste if he first climbs up the tree”. It is a love song familiar to people both from Taiwan and the mainland. People in Taiwan have been used to chew areca-nuts since long ago. You can see areca-nut trees everywhere on this island, and many areca-nut shops along every street you are strolling, and in every shop a pretty areca-nut girl. It is really an enjoyable pleasure to listen to the girls about the customs and cultures of Taiwan while chewing areca-nuts.
